Special DPH-800 (8’’ diaphragm) chuck, this setup uses a standard diaphragm chuck with custom top tooling for two operations of balancing aluminum turbine impellers. The first operation locates the workpiece using strategically placed carbide pins positioned between the impeller blades with custom jaws to clamp outside of blades. The second operation locates the impeller on the finished surface from the first operation using a continuous ring locator and custom jaws to clamp the outside diameter of the workpiece. This allows the customer to finish balance the impeller blades.

Our customer needed grip on the ID’s of their CVT transmission sheaves for runout inspection.
Top Jaws are permanently mounted onto the chuck’s master jaws to grip the ID of the part’s central bore (not shown). An air-detect Axial Locator (3 air holes evident in its top surface) was incorporated to ensure proper seating of the part upon robot-arm placement onto the chuck.
This chuck is capable of .0001” TIR total accuracy/repeatability on all critical surfaces that interface with the part.

Our customer manufactures these delicate, ceramic rings (shown in the foreground) and needed a way to carefully hold them on the OD so they could grind the ID. They requested that no metal touches their parts.
We developed custom top tooling made from the most abrasion-resistant plastic available (without a filler). These items can be quickly changed for new ones should a future need arise.

New 16C self-contained air actuated collet chuck gripping a customer’s work piece with a serrated collet. The cone shaped end of the part is inside the chuck (not seen) and stops in a female cone locater. The locater mounts to the chucks back plate making it solid (does not move). As the collet closes, it pulls the part into the hard stop giving perfect “Z” axis location. The part is turned, bored and stamp rolled.

Our customer inspects and balances torque converters and other driveline parts. They requested a chuck that can expand to grip the ID of their female splined shafts while it rotates on their balancing machine. Previously, they used a “homemade” fixture that had a slip-fit without the expanding capability to grip the ID of the part.
This chucking arrangement solved their problem, providing a reliable and repeatable method for them to grip their parts while accommodating the part’s tolerance variations.

Expanding mandrel collet chuck, This chuck clamps the minor diameter of an internal spline. While clamped the customer machines the internal counter bore, the outside profile, and face of work piece.

The jaws are strategically machined to allow for side loading and timing of work piece. The jaws will clamp the stem of the customer’s part and allow plenty of clearance to finish grind the OD of the work piece.

This air-actuated chuck has two moving jaws for gripping square or rectangular parts.
In this custom application, our customer requested Vee-Block type jaws to accommodate a range of drill sizes with each set of Insert Pads. The drill tip (not shown) stops on the axial locator (mounted to the face of the chuck), and the Insert Pads (mounted in their subjaws) clamp down on the OD of each drill while they grind its shank.
The Insert Pad and Subjaw arrangement allow for quick changeover from size to size.

This chucks uses a special precision collet to grip the pitch diameter of a splined drive shaft for balancing. The collet taper is ground inside a sphere which is then installed to the mating sphere, allowing the collet to “gimbal”. When a drive shaft is placed in a balance machine, it “whips” due to the unbalance. If the chuck holds the shaft rigid (not allowing whip,the shaft is falsely balanced with poor results. This chuck cuts the balance cycle in half with superior accuracy. Chuck is push to open and spring clamp.

This is Northfield’s new 16C self-contained, air-actuated collet chuck that grips a customer’s workpiece with a serrated collet. Shown on left is a Specialized Northfield Collet Chuck with custom top, tooling mounted. Our customer welds torque converter shells. They needed a totally-sealed, vertically-mounted chuck that can expand to grip the I.D. of their torque converter hubs while it rotates on their welding machine.
As the chuck’s I.D. collet expands, it also acts to pull the part down and onto the outer flange (shown in the photo) for repeatable location onto that datum surface.

Picture illustrates one Northfield DPH1000W, 10-inch diaphragm chuck capable of locating and clamping two work pieces with different location data. Due to production requirements, end-user requested quick and accurate changeover between the work piece numbers. The chuck was manufactured with special stepped top-jaws that could locate and clamp both work pieces without changeover. For end-to-end location difference between the work pieces, the chuck was manufactured with a master axial locator, incorporating a “button” style stop used for changeover. With replacement of only the button stop, the changeover was quick, accurate and repeatable.

This is our Northfield Model 1000 Sliding-Jaw Air Chuck (0.0001” TIR) with special Top Tooling and Axial Locator. Our customer is a gauging company that needed to grip a small area of a large casting so they can check O.D. run-out of their part. Special, tall top-jaws are diamond-coated for a secure grip on the casting. We used an Axial Locator with button pads as a resting surface for the part’s flange while swallowing the rest of the part.

This is our NF-450 chuck with special hardened top tooling. The chuck has Sub-jaws mounted on it to accept interchangeable inserts.
All top tooling is hardened to 58/63 Rockwell “C” and ground to <1/10,000” T.I.R. for maximum durability and repeatability. The inserts mount to the subjaws with (1) screw connection for fast and easy changeover.

This is a special version of our Northfield DPH-400 Diaphragm Chuck (.000010” TIR) with custom top tooling attached.
Our customer needed a drawbar-actuated chuck to grip the O.D.’s of various parts they manufacture for their grinding operations. We provided them with a one-chuck solution (shown in that allows for easy changeover of the top tooling components to accommodate all of their parts.
One part even required a spring-ejector cartridge to eject the part from the jaws’ grip after the grinding operation is completed.
A gauge ring permanently mounted to the chuck establishes a known datum for their machining process. It also has a special shell protecting the unexposed portion of their parts from the action of the grinding process.

This is an internal-grip collet chuck Northfield made for a major manufacturer of ball valves to clamp the I.D. of their valve balls. This is a dead-length collet with a removable split-part stop (part stop is made into two pieces and hinged) to locate the back-side of the work piece. The collet is removed after clamping and prior to grinding of the work piece.
This chuck is used in a valve ball grinder. The customer needed to locate/stop the ball axially on the chuck. So Northfield provided a removable spacer (locator/stop) behind the ball (between the ball and chuck) for axial location. The locator needed to be removable to allow the grinding wheel (cup) access around the top and bottom of the ball.

The 1070-250W is a (2) two jaw chuck with a special quarter inch opening on diameter (1/8” opening per jaw). This chuck is modified for Spring Clamp and air open.It uses gas springs (Nitrogen compressed gas springs) in the spring clamp mechanism. The operators chose this modification so if they lose air pressure to their machines, the parts won’t fly out and damage the operator or machine. The chuck grips the part (a cover for a torque converter) on 4 points with special carbide-coated grippers. The chuck opens at < 50psi and grips the part at a constant 35psi. The Jaws are special hardened and ground 1018 steel with a Rockwell C hardness of 58-63 (range from 58 to 63). The chuck also contains a full-circle part stop for axial location. The stop is also hardened and ground with the same hardness as the jaws. It is also modified for AUTO-LUBE.

This tooling was developed in conjunction with our customer to allow side-loading of their part into the very center of the small cylindrical insert pads (which have been wire-cut for accuracy) at the top of the photo. These insert pads are changeable (and held on-center to the chuck’s O.D. within their sub jaws as shown) to accommodate different sizes of the customer’s part. The sub jaws themselves have a large milled pocket to clear their part. This is a grinding application where Northfield Precision met the required accuracy / repeat-ability of .0001” TIR or better when mounted on the customer’s spindle.

This is a special internal grip collet chuck with pull down action, air detect part seating confirmation and quick change collets and stops. Each part rests on a hard stop with (6) pads, (3) of which have aid detect holes.
The collets grip the I.D. with pull back action. When the holes are covered, there is a pressure rise telling the machine it is OK to start the cycle.
This chuck mounts to a rotary table for drilling radial holes. This collet is unique because it has a very low profile (height =1in.) relative to the gripping diameter (4.5in.) with pull down action. The chuck repeats to 1/10,000 T.I.R. and can develop over 5,000 lbs of grip force at 100 PSI air pressure and can be mounted to lathe, grinder, milling machine, etc.

This is a face clamping chuck that has a standard Northfield model 470 mounted in the center to locate a transmission component on the root diameter while the fingers swivel into position and face clamp. The air chuck gently centers the part with no distortion while the fingers face clamp for grinding.

This is a standard model 620THS (Thru Hole Stationary) with special jaws to grip 1in. diameter. This chuck uses side ports because it does not rotate.

This is a modified Model 425 (.0001 T.I.R.) air chuck. The work piece is loaded onto the chuck, sprocket side down. The sprocket face is used for axial location. Spring pins mounted in the locator pickup 3 teeth in the sprocket to orient a timing hole on the backside to 45.648 degrees for finish machining. Hardened and ground top jaws are used to grip a 43.3mm internal diameter towards the top of the work piece.

This is a special chuck we made to mount on special spindles to hold fiber optic “canes”. The canes can be up to 2.00 inch in diameter and must pass thru the chuck. Two chucks hold the 6ft cane (one on each end) and two additional chucks hold the “handle” that gets welded onto the ends of the cane.
These chucks are lever-actuated via a fork (not shown) that pushes and pulls the groove-shaped collar at the bottom of the chuck to open and close the jaws. These chucks have lower accuracy, but extended stroke to (1in.)accommodate the range needed for the operation.
Each sub jaw shown has an Insert Pad mounted within that contains special Celazole plastic material that can repeatedly withstand temperature up to 600°F during the heat fusing process.

These are a couple of Model 470 chucks we retooled for Caterpillar. The part being gripped in one of the chucks is a “Wheel Poppet Adapter". This chuck has special serrated insert pads to securely grip the part during the operation where they are drilling the holes on the side of the part. The chuck is mounted on an indexing head to expose the side of the part for drilling.
The plates attached to the sides of the jaws are used as a datum for drilling; one plate (best seen in the upper-left hand view) flexes to push the part such that it maintains positive contact against the solid plate on the opposite side.
The chuck also has an axial locator mounted in the center with line contact so as not to influence the grip of the part, but acts as a secondary datum.

This Pitch Line chuck grips the O.D. of 9 diameter helical gears. The pins are mounted in a loose fitting housing so they can float. The pins pick up the pitch diameter and the jaws grip the O.D. of the pins. The pitch is measured over pins, so we are gripping the same way they measure. This model 100 (10”dia.) chuck has two pin cages, one for a left hand helix and one for a right hand helix. The pin cages are changed out by removing (3) mounting screws.

This is a pull own clamp fixture. The part is a Bosch jig saw housing. Two pins mounted to chuck face locate the part and two face clamps rotate 90 degrees into position and come down to clamp the part. Fixture rotates at 3,500 RPM to bore a bearing nest.

Chuck has rubber boot and stainless steel shroud to hold boot in place at high RPM. Boot seals check against coolant, dirt & grinding grit. No, we’re not making a fashion statement for chucks here! At Northfield, we affectionately refer to the aluminum anodized chuck as “BIG RED” (it’s anodized red).

“BIG RED” is used by sub contractor Creed Monarch to manufacture close tolerance parts for Robert Bosch Power Tools. We designed “BIG RED” to accommodate the unusual shape of the “Wobble Plate” part of the drive mechanism of a Bosch reciprocating saw. The “Wobble Plate” is made from 52100 tool steel, heat-treated to 58/63 Rc. It is then spun to 3,500 rpm for hard turning the “Wobble Plate” I.D. which is in reality the outer race of a bearing set.

“BIG RED” is yet another example of custom application “beyond the chuck.” Its spring-loaded plunger and locator ensure accurate locating of the “Wobble Plate” to four specific reference points or surfaces (see photo). When hand mounted on the face of a fixture, the unique design and accuracy of the fixture provide repeatability of 0.002 inches. “BIG RED” solved the previous holding problems and in addition, saved a tremendous amount of production time, since the fixture allows automatic operation after the initial hand loading.

When a special chuck was needed to hold an unusually shaped automotive part, Northfield was asked for ideas. The machining operation was basic, hard turn a straight bore that is case hardened to 58/63 Rockwell “C”. The complicating factor was the shape of the part; it was not round or concentric. The straight bore must be machined concentric to a cone shaped hub and perpendicular to a larger offset rectangular flange.

After reviewing the problem, Paul DeFeo, Chief Engineer at Northfield, realized that the most accurate way to hold the part was to grip it by the cone and bank off the flange. The question was how, since the cone surface was too steep to be gripped by conventional chuck jaws.

The solution was to design a special drawbar-actuated, pull-down chuck with a spring- loaded funnel shaped base that was a female version of the cone shape on the part. This base fits into the chuck body with a zero clearance sliding fit. The operator pushes the part down into the funnel, two spring loaded ball plungers hold the part in place, allowing the operator to move his hands away from the work area before activating the chuck.

Upon actuation, clamping arms swing over and down onto the part’s flange. The spring loaded funnel base picks up the cone for centralization and slides into the chuck as the flange comes to a fixed stop for axial location and clamping.

After machining, the arms retract and the part is pushed up and out for easy removal. How is this “not just chucks” approach working? Using our chuck, this application runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, producing parts with outstanding accuracy and repeatability
