Northfield Pressure-LokTM Chucking System

Our recent product introduction, the Northfield Pressure-Lok TM Chucking System is an air chucking system that works without the air tubes and hoses.

The Pressure-LokTM air chuck once charged with air pressure can hold pressure for up-to 3 weeks! Ideally implemented in machining operations that do not have access to a continuous supply of air.

The quick connect fitting is compatible with all Northfield chucks. The air pressure can be altered between 5 & 80 P.S.I. to adjust the grip force as required, improving the flexibility offered by spring clamping alone.

Pitch-line Gear Chucks

Introducing the series of pneumatic actuated pitch-line gear chucks.

Helical Gear Chuck

Spur Gear Chuck
Spur Gear Chuck

How can we help you?

These two chucks are 7-inch diaphragm chucks. For multiple gear sizes, chucks can be provided with interchangeable cages and top jaws.

How do we do it?

We attach a custom designed axial locator cage to a standard chuck. This contains a series of floating gage pins in a flexible mounting. Then, we load the gear over the pins into the chuck. The jaws clamp over the pins to center and grip the gear providing a “best fit” centerline of the pitch diameter.

Pitch line gear chucks can be provided in sizes from 3-inch to 12-inch diameter, sliding jaw or diaphragm models and can be applied to spur or helical gear applications.

Northfield Precision - How can we help?

5 Minutes with Charles Florio Northfield Sales & Darryl Celli Senior Applications Engineer

How can we help?

Charles Florio, part of the US based Northfield sales team, and Darryl Celli, one of Northfields Senior application engineers, share their insights about how Northfield can help solve your work holding needs.

Thank you for taking the time. You are the first port of call for Northfield customers, tell us about the most common questions?

Charles…

When starting new project it’s common to discuss similar experiences related to the customers business and to introduce the product range. At Northfield Precision we have two main product areas.

  1. Our standard high precision range of: Air, Diaphragm and Collet chucks. These are always available, in a range of sizes, for immediate order. Just give us a call. (516) 431 1112
  2. Custom applications and unique products are our second speciality Check out our custom projects for some ideas.

Northfield has over 50 years of hands-on experience working across multiple industries on a global scale. At Northfield Precision we excel at automotive, aerospace, and medical applications.

Darryl…

We can adapt any of our chucks to custom and very specific situations, for example, high precision finishing work with pneumatic clamping pressure. All we need is your machine specification or a technical drawing. Drop us a line sales@northfield.com or call (516) 431 1112

Why should Northfield Precision be your preferred work holding provider?

Darryl…

Repeatability is one common question. Our standard Air Chucks offer .0001 T.I.R. repeatability, best in class. Combined with our world leading precision and accuracy, this is where Northfield really sets itself apart from the competition.

Charles…

Firstly, it is always our goal to completely understand the customer and their requirements before getting to work. This ensures we deliver the best possible product.

I always begin the conversation by discussing the exact application.

  • “What is the part material (metal, ceramic or glass).”
  • “Will the chuck be used in a turning or grinding environment?”
  • “What type of machine will the chuck be used on?”

Finally, our custom specialities are best at high precision finishing work, and we excel at providing solutions that require light clamping pressure. Our chucks allow the pressure to be fine-tuned by the end user and is possible because of our extensive experience delivering pneumatic solutions.

We are always on hand to discuss your project and answer any questions.

Custom Diaphragm Chuck for milling precision gears

Every week exciting new projects are heading out the door, such as this Custom Diaphragm Chuck for milling precision gears.

Brief: The customers work piece is a small precision gear that requires milling on one face, timed to existing geometry.

Challenge: The outer diameter of this gear could not be touched so it needed to be gripped on the root diameter.

Solution: A Northfield DPH-400 (.00050” T.I.R.) 4” diameter diaphragm chuck was provided, with sub jaws, changeable inserts and stops for different sized work pieces.

  • The inserts are wire cut to clear the major diameter and clamp on the root diameter.
  • Changeable stop pads have timing pins, to orient the work pieces prior to clamping.
  • The base stop has a ground indicating band for initial setup.
  • The chucks ‘pull-back clamping’ action ensures the part is seated flat.

Getting to the ‘Heart’ of the Problem

Brief:

A Biomedical engineering customer set Northfield the following brief. To create chucks to hold heart valves, after coating, to finish grind. They were required to have multiple small internal grip collets and stops to allow fast tooling change over.

Challenge:

The small collet sizes and stop pads made this job unique. We were asked to hold the internal diameter of small multiple sized parts for a finish grinding operation. The internal diameters ranged from .305in (8mm) – .575in (14mm). We were also asked to locate datum that was inside the part on a small banking area.

The varying expansion range of the collet was an additional challenge. The customer part had a coating on it for which there was no set thickness. To solve this, we worked with the customers tolerance range and allowed the collets to expand approximately .040in (1mm) in diameter to allow for this coating variance.

Solution:

Three things were key:

1. Accuracy

2. Repeatability

3. Quick change over times

Our customer has many different part sizes and they wanted minimal down time when switching to a new setup. They could not be happier with the setup and are thrilled with how the project continues to produce accurate parts.

Precision and Customization

Medical Engineering

Always looking for a chance to innovate, the Northfield team were excited to bring their years of work holding expertise to the medical industry creating parts for joint replacement.

Brief:

Achieve the appropriate tolerances requested. This included: concentricity, accuracy, and repeatability from part to part. We achieved this while allowing easy operation and quick tooling change over.

The Northfield team created two separate solutions:

  1. The first, develop a collet chuck solution to hold shoulder joint inserts to ‘finish-turn’ the outside.

2. Secondly, holding multiple knee-joints simultaneously with a specific grip force. The customer required special clearance for milling tools and part sensing ports. These were designed allowing the machine to acknowledge when the parts are correctly loaded and ready to be manufactured.

custom_air_chucks

Challenge:

  1. Holding the half sphere shoulder parts from the inside with only a minimal surface area, to allow the finishing operation on the outside.
  2. The knee joints required custom air chucks to clamp various part sizes at the same time for finish milling.
  3. Ensure the correct jaw force was applied to the delicate parts throughout the entire process.

Solution:

  1. Northfield offers a large range of standard precision collet chucks, that grip a part internally. This job was unique as we developed a special contoured collet with a specific shape. Finish milled to enable holding several different part sizes. We also added a locating surface that uniquely has a small surface area, although robust and accurate enough to allow a long tooling lifetime.

2. Four different sized parts need to be held at the same time, therefore multiple Northfield chucks are in use simultaneously. Our customer wanted to finish the second operation of all the parts at once, achieved by creating a base plate with easy air porting.

3. Finally, we also delivered a force analyser that works together with our custom tooling, creating a turn-key solution with specific grip force.
