Pressure Lok™

The Pressure-Lok™ air chuck is charged with air by a special handle and holds air pressure for 3 weeks. Ideally implemented in machining operations that do not have access to a continuous air supply. The quick connect fitting is compatible with all Northfield chucks and the air pressure can be altered between 5 & 80 P.S.I..

Long Beach High School – Working Students

Working students continue to visit Northfield as part of our continued commitment to supporting the community. This June we attended a luncheon to celebrate the hard work and development of the students that have come to work at the Northfield offices over the past year.

The luncheon was to thank the sponsors who have invited students to visit their business’ each week during the school year. All the students and aides were in attendance to celebrate their achievements.

David did a great job taking charge of a variety of tasks. Including updating the saw log. We log when material is cut and then track it in the shop if we need to find it. A job very important to the whole team.

Balancing:

When parts rotate without calibration, uneven pressure can occur and cause errors with the end-product. Firstly, within a high precision environment the smallest difference can have a huge impact on the final product. Therefore, when fine tolerances are exceeded the result can be expensive and time-consuming repairs.

With ever increasing speeds used on rotating machinery, balancing is increasingly necessary. The trademark accuracy and repeatability of Northfield chucks allow customers to take their designs to the next level.

Northfield products tackling balancing challenges:

Drive Shaft C.V Joints

Recently we have been producing internal grip collet chucks for balancing drive shafts. They are capable of repeating to less than 0.005mm total indicator reading.

To achieve this, the collet is ground to grip the pitch diameter of splined C.V. joints of a driveshaft assembly. Secondly, the “cone” has multiple stop pads for axial location and finally, tapped holes are used to balance the chuck assembly prior to production.

8000 RPM Double Diaphragm Chuck

This customer required a chuck for their balancing machines to hold drive shafts by their slip-yokes.

Normal balancing operations are performed at approximately 900 rpm. High-performance vehicles like Stock and Formula 1 cars hit 200 mph with their drive-shafts rotating at 10,000 to 12,000 rpm. Therefore, this case required accurate holding at road conditions, 8000 rpm.

The Northfield solution consists of two separate custom diaphragm chucks built together. There are two separate sets of jaws, one mounted in front of the other. This accommodates the long, thin shape of the part. With one set of jaws gripping the front of the piece and the other gripping the rear. 

The result is accuracy of 1/10,000″ T.I.R. and repeatability to 50 millionths with extreme rigidity.

Turbine Balancing

This custom project used an 8” diaphragm chuck with custom top tooling for balancing aluminium turbine impellers.

The first, locates the workpiece using strategically positioned carbide pins between the blades and custom jaws clamping outside of blades.

The second, operation locates the impeller on the finished surface using a continuous ring locator. Custom jaws clamp the outside diameter of the workpiece. This allows the customer to finish balance the impeller blades

Northfield Community - Positive Behaviour - Oceanside High School

The Holidays are a time for reflection and this last year has been tougher than most, especially as we have needed to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic since day one. That said, it has not stopped the Northfield team taking the time to give something back to the community.

This year, we have been welcoming special education students to the office and workshop, with Rebecca Ryan from Positive Behavior and Oceanside High School. Together we have been providing the opportunity for the students to step out of their comfort zone and learn new life skills.

I work providing professional development opportunities and positive behaviour support for individuals in community settings. At Northfield the students learn about manufacturing and gain experience in a professional workplace.

Professional work experience is key for improving the student’s self-esteem and building confidence. They gain essential skills for work and life such as: resilience, problem-solving, team-working and communication.”

After such a positive experience with one student, we now welcome 4 students to our workshop and office on a regular basis. The tasks range from supporting the office team with organization to spending time on the shop floor with the engineers, learning how we create our high precision work holding parts. Everyone here is welcoming and immensely proud to be involved.

In December, OHS had the opportunity to visit Northfield Precision Corporation in Island Park, NY. Oceanside High School and support agencies, such as PBS, partner with local business. We work to provide meaningful internship opportunities for our students.

At the moment, Northfield Precision Corp. has opened their doors to students in our ACE program. Students attend different locations throughout the week for exposure to different jobs to develop career readiness skills.

As a representative from OHS it was my honor to tour the facility with Rebecca Ryan, our Work Based Coordinator and Paul de Feo, CEO/President of the corporation.

It was a highlight to see our students and support staff working together with Northfield employees in a variety of tasks.

Getting involved!

It was a privilege to be taken on a comprehensive tour that, Mr. De Feo so generously gave. Explaining all the amazing products produced here, the state of the art machines and computers.

It was inspiring to meet the employees; most of which have been with the company for many years.

Looking ahead we are excited to develop an internship program with our STEM students.

Custom Parts, Custom Colors

No, we’re not making a fashion statement for chucks here!

At Northfield, we affectionately refer to the aluminium anodized chuck as “BIG RED”. Creed Monarch use “BIG RED” to manufacture close tolerance parts for Robert Bosch Power Tools.

We designed “BIG RED” to accommodate the unusual shape of the ‘Wobble Plate’ part of the drive mechanism in a Bosch reciprocating saw. Improving accuracy and dramatically reducing change over time.

Model Big Red Custom Chuck — Northfield custom work holding, model ‘big red’

The “Wobble Plate” is made from 52100 tool steel and heat-treated to 58/63 Rockwell. Spinning at 3,500 rpm for hard turning the “Wobble Plate” internal diameter, creates the outer race of a bearing set.

“BIG RED” is a example of our custom work holding at Northfield beyond the chuck.

The spring-loaded plunger and locator ensure accurate locating of the “Wobble Plate” to four specific reference points.
When hand mounted on the face of a fixture, the unique design provide repeatability of 0.002 inches.
The fixture allows automatic operation after the initial loading.

“BIG RED” solved previous holding problems and saves a tremendous amount of production time.
