CUSTOM COLLET CHUCKS

OVERVIEW

Northfield is continually developing custom designed collet chucks to solve problems for all metal, composite, ceramic and glass materials. Our engineers provide custom workholding solutions to exactly meet each workholding requirement to bring gage block accuracy to your production pieces.

SELF-CONTAINED AIR ACTUATED

New 16C self-contained air actuated collet chuck gripping a customer’s work piece with a serrated collet. The cone shaped end of the part is inside the chuck (not seen) and stops in a female cone locater. The locater mounts to the chucks back plate making it solid (does not move). As the collet closes, it pulls the part into the hard stop giving perfect “Z” axis location. The part is turned, bored and stamp rolled.

MANDREL COLLET CHUCK

Expanding mandrel collet chuck, This chuck clamps the minor diameter of an internal spline. While clamped the customer machines the internal counter bore, the outside profile, and face of work piece. This chuck also includes air detect sensor holes, and provides positive air blowout to keep chips and slurry away from clamping and locating surfaces.

SPECIAL INTERNAL GRIP COLLET CHUCK

Special internal grip collet chuck for balancing drive shafts. The collet on this chuck is ground to grip the pitch diameter of splined C.V. joints of a driveshaft assembly. The “cone” has (3) stop pads for axial location. Tapped holes on the O.D. are used to balance the chuck assembly prior to production. Chuck repeats to less than .0002 in. T.I.R.

SPECIAL INTERNAL GRIP COLLET CHUCK

Specialized internal grip collet chuck with pull-down action and air detect part seat sensing. The pull-down action and air detect sensing ensure that the part is seated properly before the machine cycle starts. Chuck is used on a vertical machining center for rough and finish milling.

SPECIAL I.D. COLLET CHUCK

Shown on left is a Specialized Northfield Collet Chuck with custom top, tooling mounted. Our customer welds torque converter shells. They needed a totally-sealed, vertically-mounted chuck that can expand to grip the I.D. of their torque converter hubs while it rotates on their welding machine. As the chuck’s I.D. collet expands, it also acts to pull the part down and onto the outer flange (shown in the photo) for repeatable location onto that datum surface.

4" DIAMETER I.D. COLLET CHUCK

Special 4 in. diameter internal grip collet chuck gripping a medical component for grinding. This chuck grips a .310in. I.D. .700in. deep and pulls the part against the hard stop. Repeatability is 1/10,000 T.I.R. Chuck is air actuated with built in self contain air cylinder.

SMALL COLLET CHUCK

Special 6-inch diameter internal-grip collet chuck to grip transmission component for milling. Chuck has “air-detect” part seat sensing and is shown on an adapter to mount chuck to a vertical machining center. Collet is designed to have no pull back or lift. Chuck is air-actuated with built-in, self- contained air cylinder.

HYDRAULICALLY ACTUATED COLLET CHUCK

Special hydraulically-actuated, internal-grip collet chucks for automotive application. Eight chucks mount on a pallet in a vertical machining center, and grip automotive parts for drilling. The chucks are only 3-inches in diameter but deliver up to 1,200 lbs, of draw force. Collets repeat to 1/10,000 T.I.R. and pull the part onto the center hard-stop.

Chucks are only 3-inches in diameter but deliver up to 1,200 lbs. of draw force. Collets repeat to 1/10,000 T.I.R and pull the part onto the center hard stop.

GO AHEAD… HAVE A BALL

This is an internal-grip collet chuck Northfield made for a major manufacturer of ball valves to clamp the I.D. of their valve balls. This is a dead-length collet with a removable split-part stop (part stop is made into two pieces and hinged) to locate the back-side of the work piece. The collet is removed after clamping and prior to grinding of the work piece. This chuck is used in a valve ball grinder. The customer needed to locate/stop the ball axially on the chuck. So Northfield provided a removable spacer (locator/stop) behind the ball (between the ball and chuck) for axial location. The locator needed to be removable to allow the grinding wheel (cup) access around the top and bottom of the ball.

SPECIAL INTERNAL GRIP COLLET CHUCK

Specialized internal grip collet chuck with pull-down action and air-detect part seat sensing. The pull-down action and air-detect sensing ensure that the part is seated properly before the machine cycle starts. Chuck is used on a vertical machining center for rough and finish milling.

8" I.D. GRIP COLLET CHUCK

This is an 8-inch diameter, internal-grip collet chuck that grips on the “pitch diameter” of a spline. The collet is spring clamp/push to open. Pull-back action of the collet draws the part onto the hard stop. The collets and stops are changeable for different size workpieces.

SPECIAL 6" DIAMETER I.D. COLLET CHUCK

Chuck is air-actuated with built-in, self-contained air cylinder.

MODEL 650 WITH COLLET CHUCK

Photo shows Northfield’s standard model 650 air chuck (right) and standard 6in collet chuck (left). These chucks are used on a tilting rotary table which makes it difficult to remove the air feed when changing from air chuck to collet chuck. The adapter (center) has air ported through it, and the chucks have matching air ports. When changing over, there is no “air tube” to unscrew--simply unbolt one and mount the other.

SPECIAL 2 STAGE I.D. COLLET CHUCK

Special “Two Stage” internal grip collet chucks. These chucks hold transmission gears for face grinding. The customer required that the chucks “first” grip the part, then pull it back 1.5mm onto an air-detect part-stop. The chucks are air-open and spring-clamped. Changeable collets and air-detect stops run over 13 different part sizes. Running 24/7 with a 45-second machine cycle, these chucks come back to Northfield once a year for cleaning and seal changes. Chuck diameter is 6.5-inches.
