Custom Balancing Workholding

Our customer provides Dynamic Balancing Machines and Services. Inspecting and balancing: torque converters and rotating driveline parts up to 10,000lbs.

Brief

The request is for a chuck that can expand to grip the inner diameter of female splined shafts, while it rotates on their balancing machine.

The challenge is to improve their previous solution. They were previously using a “homemade” fixture. It had a slip-fit without the expanding capability to grip the inner diameter of the part.

Shown above is our Northfield Model 450 Sliding-Jaw Air Chuck (0.0001” TIR) with special ID-gripping Top Jaws. Additionally, an integral Axial Locator increases the speed of part change over and accurate part seating before starting the operation.

Result

This chucking arrangement solves their problem. It provides a reliable and repeatable method for them to grip their parts while accommodating the part’s tolerance variations.

Custom Collets – Air vs. Hydraulic

Brief: 

The task is tooling up a standard dual head rotary table to accommodate the bolt carrier.

Challenge:

The challenge of this job is to provide a work holding solution, allowing actuation of the work holding on the customers table.

Northfield Solution: 

The Northfield 16C collet chucks are air driven units as standard. Pairing these with an adapter plate and air tube allows actuation on the customers rotary table. Additionally, these chucks allow the usage of standard 16C collets. 

Air vs Hydraulic: 

These chucks are also available in a hydraulic format. This same setup has been supplied to other manufactures with a hydraulic configuration. Providing a greater grip force than our air driven units. This is useful when heavy milling or turning operations require a higher grip force capacity and the material being held supports such a setup.

Finishing Output Gears

I discussed this our senior applications engineer Mitchell to get his insights on the project. First of all Mitch please tell us about the brief from the customer?

Brief:

Our customer manufactures output gears and needs to grip the inner diameter of a family of transmission input/output gears for finish turning.

That sounds like an interesting project and not an easy one to solve. What are the main challenges with this brief?

Challenge:

The first main challenge is working with a variety of part sizes. The loading process also needs to take place quickly without swapping the complete chuck during the process. The additional challenge is including enough clearance from the chuck for cutting the parts internally to the required depth.

That’s a lot to work with, how did you solve this and what did you deliver to the customer?

Solution:

The idea behind our design is a “quick-change” style. To handle the different sized parts, subjaws are permanently mounted to the chuck’s master jaws. The Quick-Change top jaws are held in place with a single bolt. It passes through a keyhole slot in each jaw pad. Each jaw segment only has one fastening bolt, meaning no locating pins.

A 3-legged universal Axial Locator is also mounted to the face of the chuck. All parts fit to this without changeover, saving time and reducing errors when switching between parts.

Balancing: 

When parts rotate without calibration, uneven pressure can occur and cause errors with the end-product. Recently we have been producing internal grip collet chucks for balancing drive shafts. They are capable of repeating to less than 0.005mm total indicator reading.

To achieve this, the collet is ground to grip the pitch diameter of splined C.V. joints of a driveshaft assembly. Secondly, the “cone” has multiple stop pads for axial location and finally, tapped holes are used to balance the chuck assembly prior to production.

This customer required a chuck for their balancing machines to hold drive shafts by their slip-yokes. 

Normal balancing operations are performed at approximately 900 rpm. High-performance vehicles like Stock and Formula 1 cars hit 200 mph with their drive-shafts rotating at 10,000 to 12,000 rpm. Therefore, this case required accurate holding at road conditions, 8000 rpm 

The Northfield solution consists of two separate custom diaphragm chucks built together. There are two separate sets of jaws, one mounted in front of the other. This accommodates the long, thin shape of the part. With one set of jaws gripping the front of the piece and the other gripping the rear.  

The result is accuracy of 1/10,000″ T.I.R. and repeatability to 50 millionths with extreme rigidity.

This custom project used an 8” diaphragm chuck with custom top tooling for balancing aluminium turbine impellers. 

The first, locates the workpiece using strategically positioned carbide pins between the blades and custom jaws clamping outside of blades.

The second, operation locates the impeller on the finished surface using a continuous ring locator. Custom jaws clamp the outside diameter of the workpiece. This allows the customer to finish balance the impeller blades

Lathe Finish Turning

Our customer is an OEM manufacturer of welding equipment.

Brief

The work holding requirement is for a lathe. Our customer needs a chuck that expands to grip the inner diameter of welding shield caps so they can finish-turn its rough outer shape.

Shown here is a highly-specialized, 4.500” diameter, Northfield Collet Chuck with custom top tooling mounted.

As the chuck’s internal diameter collet expands, it also acts to pull the part down and onto its outer banking surface shown in the photo at the right. This insures repeatable location onto the datum surface, saving time and reducing error.

Turbine Grinding Workholding

Our customer designs and sells grinding and super abrasive machining systems specifically for a variety of applications and industries. 

Brief

The operation is to grind the outer diameter of the turbine’s fins, to ensure ultra-accurate clearance within the turbo housing, due to its efficiency requirements. 

Challenge

The work holding chuck needs to hold the long shaft of this turbine and to grip the grooved diameter underneath its head.

Solution

Our solution is a  5” Diaphragm Chuck (Northfield DPH-500) Especially customized. In addition, to the brief the chuck has a spring-loaded carbide center, down in the bore of the chuck. This initially centers the part upon loading.
