1) Start with the functional datum
Question: What surface must be perfect after the cycle?
- I.D. datum: choose an internal-grip collet mandrel with pull-back onto a face stop.
- O.D. datum: choose a diaphragm or full-circle jaw chuck that centers on the datum diameter and seats on a face.
- Face datum only: use face clamps or pull-back collet that registers on the face and controls radial location with jaws or pilots.

2) Map the part stiffness and contact strategy
- Thin walls / small I.D.: distribute load with diaphragm jaws or full-circle pads.

- Deep grip length: specify extended-reach collets with pull-back seating.

3) Define the runout and form targets at the grip
Write the spec at the datum surface, not only on the finished feature.
- At the grip, target low-single-micron TIR when finished relationships are ≤ 4–5 µm.
- Require clamp/unclamp radial repeatability at the datum.

4) Set the clamp-force window
You need enough force to resist process loads without distorting the part.
- Call out a pressure-to-force range that includes near-zero for seating and a high end for cutting or grinding forces.
- For thin sections, require low-pressure actuation capability.

5) Plan for speed and dynamics
High rpm or rotary tables amplify small errors.
- Specify balance at operating speed and limits for radial runout of the rotating assembly
- Avoid long rotating feed tubes for air or coolant.

6) Address the machine envelope and media
- Tilting 5-axis tables: rear clearance is minimal. Choose self-contained pneumatic chucks or integrated 5C collet chucks that need only an air line.

- Chip-prone milling/collet work: add through-bore air blast and chip windows.

7) Specify verification and automation
Lights-out requires proof of seating and consistent interchangeability.
